Iron Queen of the South (#1/#10)
Named in honor of the ghost town New Birmingham, this hole is a short par 4. The fairway slopes severely right to left so keep on the high side. The green looks flat, but slopes from the front to the back and is quicker than you think. #10 tee box turns this hole into a dogleg left.
The Caddoan (#2/#11)
This hole is the longest par 4 on the course. With a slight dogleg right, par is a good score. The back nine plays as a par 5 and is a good birdie opportunity.
The Southern (#3/#12)
This hole is a short par 5. (Originally hole #1 when the course was built in 1967) A good drive gives you an iron into the green and a chance at eagle. The shot to the green is uphill and plays longer than you might think. #12 plays as a tough par 4. Keep your drive in the fairway and hope for par. ( Try and keep the ball below the hole on this sloping green)
The Iron Horse (#4/#13)
Straight away par 4. A good drive gives you a short shot into a severely sloped green. Stay below the hole if you can.
The Widow’s Curse (#5/#14)
Hopefully the curse put on New Birmingham won’t affect your golf game. This is the first hole in what begins a “roller coaster” finish. This hole can be played two ways… play it safe.. hit a long iron to stay short of a creek and pond, hit a mid iron up the hill and short iron to the green… or… hit driver, bring the water into play, but also bring “eagle into play” It’s your call. (The tee shot is blind so keep down the left side) The green is not very deep, but it’s wide and slopes from back to front.
Hawk’s Hole (#6/#15)
This short par 3 plays shorter than the yardage because of the elevation change. Hole #15 is considered by many to be Birmingham’s signature hole with a view of over 30 miles. The green slopes from front to back
The Tassie Bell (#7/#16)
This short par 4 is a difficult 90 degree dogleg right. The tee shot requires a 150 – 160 yard shot to the middle of the fairway. Difficulty comes from the approach off of a downhill side hill lie to an elevated small green with oak trees standing guard on the right side and a lake guarding the left and behind. The Star and Crescent (#8/#17)
Another 90 degree dogleg, this one to the left. Once again only requires a 160 yard tee shot to the corner. An oak tree short left of the green comes into play on approaches. The green can be hit from the tee box with a high draw of about 220 yards.
The Governor (#9/#18)
This par 3 is the finishing hole of Birmingham’s “Amen Corner” of #7,#8,#9. A huge Oak guards this elevated green. Don’t go left or long. The back tee makes a difficult finish.
